“my name is sufjan stevens and i’ll be your entertainer for the night. i’ll be singing songs about love, heartbreak, and the apocalypse.”
i’ll try to keep this brief:
the show was way more than a musical performance. it was part art and philosophy lecture, part self-proclaimed psychotherapy, part visual art/multimedia fest…
everything i expected and more.
he was funny, charming, endearing, witty, awkward, intelligent, beyond talented, weird, and then some.
and he danced.
yes, the man has moves.
his 10-person band sounded great (complete with two drummers, horns, back up singers, the whole she-bang), and his voice is just as perfect live as it sounds recorded.
he played mostly brand new stuff off of “the age of adz” as well as older things (played mostly just him and his acoustic) from “seven swans” and “…illinoise”.
the show began with “seven swans” and ended with “john wayne gacy, jr.”
in summation,
best live show i’ve seen in a really long time.
two thumbs way way up.
